Inmate Details: Here, you can find descriptive information about the individual such as their appearance (e.g., height, weight, hair color and eye color), date of birth and race. You can also find an inmate’s New York State ID number in this section.

Booking Information: In this section, you can find New York County bookings information such as when the individual was arrested and incarcerated and when their next court date will be held. You can also find out where they are currently being held and their current bail status.

Charge: You can look through this section to find a lot of useful information on the status and location of the individual’s criminal charges with the relevant New York County court. You can find the docket and indictment number as well as the specific Court name and part where the criminal proceedings were or are currently being held.

Warrants: The final section provides warrant information for the individual, including whether an inmate has any warrants out for their arrest, who issued the warrant, and the warrant’s severity.

New York marriage records are only available to the general public if they are over 50 years old. For marriage record requests less than 50 years old, you must fall under one of the below acceptable reasons for making a request:

The basic fee for these older records is $18.00 per certified copy. However, that price can go up depending on other factors like whether you have the certificate number or how you want the marriage records delivered. For instance, if you do not know the certificate number for the marriage record you are looking for, you will be charged a $7.00 search fee.

How To Complete a Background Check in New York County, New York

There are many reasons to get a background check on someone, whether a neighbor, coworker, or acquaintance. If you just want to perform your own informal personal background check on a person, you can use the tools and resources provided in this article to search for an individual’s criminal record, marriage status, and more New York County public records.

If you are performing a personal background check, you can do so for any reason–as long as it’s not illegal–and you do not have to tell the person that you are performing a background check on them.

You may need a professional background check instead. This usually comes at the request of someone else, like an employer or licensing agency. A professional background check is often needed to do the following:

  • Get approved to lease a rental property
  • Obtain a firearm license
  • Work or volunteer at a job that involves children or the elderly

If a person or company wants to conduct a professional background check, they are required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act to request and receive your consent.22 Even if they have your consent, they cannot use the information contained in the background check to discriminate against you. If they do, you have rights and protections provided by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).23

You can get a background check in New York County through the New York City Police Department (NYPD). A background check in New York City is referred to as a “Certificate of Conduct.” The scope of the background check they provide is limited to New York City.

Requests for background checks can only be done in person at the below address:

NYPD Certificate of Conduct & Non-Criminal Fingerprint Unit
One Police Plaza, Rm. 152-A
New York, New York 10038

Before you go in, however, make sure you schedule an appointment online.24 They do not allow people to request a background check in person without scheduling an appointment since the background check requires fingerprinting and photograph services.

In addition, you will have to bring along your government issued identification and payment for the fee. The fee for a background check is $50.00 plus $1.00 for each additional non-criminal fingerprint card you request. Make sure you have the original (not a photocopy) of your approved identification; the NYPD provides a list of acceptable forms of identification for both U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens.

After you complete your in-person request, the estimated processing time before your Certificate of Conduct (background check) is mailed to you is 10 business days.

The hours for the Certificate of Conduct and Non-Criminal Fingerprint Unit is Monday through Friday from 9:00AM to 5:00PM (only until 4:00PM for fingerprinting services). If you have any specific questions regarding their background check services, you can call them at 646-610-5541.

You can also request a New York State Criminal History Background check through the state’s Division of Criminal Justice Services.25 Here, you can get a background check that includes the following information from the entire state of New York:

  • Criminal court records
  • Indictment and conviction information
  • Details about an individual’s sentence

The statewide background check also provides additional ways to expand your search. For instance, you can request your criminal history record to be unsuppressed which means it will also provide you information on criminal records that were suppressed or sealed by a court order.

The fee for New York residents is $13.50, and $43.50 for people that live outside of New York. From the time you complete your background check, it will take approximately 3-4 weeks before you receive it via U.S. mail.

How To Use the NYC Department of Corrections Inmate Tool To Check for New York County Warrants

When you get your search results, you will see several sections of inmate information. To find out if someone has a warrant, you can scroll all the way to the bottom and see the warrant section. The warrant section will provide you with the below information:

  • Warrant number
  • Type (this includes who issued the warrant)
  • Charge
  • Severity

If you are looking for additional warrant information, you can also check with New York County criminal courts for warrants issued by the New York City Police Department, contact the New York County courthouse at 646-386-4511, or go in person at the below address:

How To See if Someone Is on Probation in New York County

If you want to find out if someone is on probation in New York County, you can try searching for information online through the NYC Department of Correction Inmate Lookup Service.

The tool does not explicitly state whether an individual is on probation. However, there is information about their arrest, charges, and current housing facility. As an example, if a person was recently convicted of a misdemeanor crime but is no longer in jail, it is likely that they may be on probation.

Statewide, you can also use the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to determine if a person was convicted of a crime and recently released from jail. This information may help you determine if someone is currently on probation (or alternatively, parole–the release from prison to supervision). In fact, they actually have a specific Parolee Search Tool if you want to find out if someone is currently out on parole.27
